Horsemanship Clinic (2 Day)

The two day horsemanship clinic has many possible benefits. It is designed for people who want to better their relationship with their horse as well as for people who simply want to begin a deep understanding of the horse as they enter the world of horsemanship.

We are able to work horses and owners through many issues that can occur during training or schooling such as bucking, bolting, rearing, kicking, refusal to go forward, trouble stopping and more. We can address stall manners and attitude issues as well.

The work will be done both from the ground and in the tack if riding is appropriate. All clinics are started with horses in hand so Tom is able to evaluate the horses and handlers together in the safest environment possible. The direction of training is set by the needs of the horse first. Handles are then coached through the process of diagnosis and then a basic plan is set out for the work needed. The pace of the training is also set by the horse.

Beginners will be coached through the fundamentals of body language (equus) and will also start with work on the ground using leading, lunging and long lining as tools to bond with the horse.

Participants are also welcome to bring a horse who is going well and simply help it go better.

We are also able to help owners start young horses and restart horses off the track or being rehabilitated. Tom’s experience training horses at Whispering Hearts Horse Rescue has been valuable for this process.

Introduction to Non Resistance Training clinic

This clinic is designed to give a basic overview of what Non Resistance Training or Horse Whispering is and the foundations that make it work.

There are a number of principals that factor into this approach or methodology. The first principal is the tension between predator and prey. We are predators and the horse is a prey animal. Sorting out the issues inherent in this relationship is critical to developing any relationship with your horse.

The second principal is herd mentality or dynamics. There is a certain set of rules that exist in the horse community and knowing how those rules work is important to the success of training your horse.

The third principal is body language or the language of Equus. This is the beginnings of understanding how horses communicate with each other within their community. When we begin to speak to the horse in a manner that is clear and understandable to the horse, we are then able to cultivate respect and then trust.

The morning session will be teaching of these fundamental principals demonstrating with the use of several horses on site. You will be able to see the language of equus at work with ground work such as leading, lunging and long lining.

The afternoon session is for participants to put this information to work using horses on site. These people will be leading, lunging and long lining horses in groups of two or three for 60-90 minutes being coached through the principals by Tom.
